About the County Library

It is the mission of the Bradford County Library to provide high quality library service to all county residents, to encourage the sharing of resources through cooperation and partnerships and to serve as a point of access to meet the cultural, information, educational, and recreational needs of all Bradford’s residents.

History

In 1941, the Bradford-Wyoming-Sullivan County Library was established, largely due to the efforts of Dawes Markwell, who was the library’s director for 30 years. The second library director, Fanna Proper, served the county for another 30 years. Originally located at the back of the County Manor, it occupied a small space to support its primary service, the bookmobile. When the manor needed to expand, the library was forced to relocate. Temporary quarters in an automobile showroom followed until the current building was finished in 1986.
