This Park is located in Leroy Township on top of Barclay Mountain. It consists of about 70 acres of land with a 30 acre pond stocked with trout, bass, pickerel, perch and sunfish. Boating is allowed but only electric motors. It is also surrounded by thousands of acres of State Game Lands. We have 38 RV sites with electric only and about a dozen tent camping sites. There are shower and restroom facilities as well as a camp store which has some supplies and a short food menu. This park currently has only one large pavilion. History of Sunfish Pond County Park
Known in earlier years as Crystal Lake, this pond has drawn visitors to Barclay Mountain for over 100 years.
In the early 1900’s the Pennsylvania Game Commission was in the process of establishing game refuges on state and private lands. In 1915, the Pennsylvania Game Commission was authorized to establish game refuges on private lands. In 1920, 1600 acres of private land was purchased and refuge #12, which includes much of the southern portion of Leroy Township, was the first refuge on private land in Pennsylvania.
Sunfish Pond was part of the game refuge, and a game protector was hired. A refuge keeper’s house was located at Sunfish Pond, from which the refuge keeper performed his duties of trapping and killing vermin, raising game, planting trees and fighting forest fires. In 1936, the commission began closing these game refuges and Refuge #12 was removed in 1946.
In the early 1970’s the Commission traded the land surrounding Sunfish Pond for a tract of land elsewhere to Bradford County, allowing the creation of Sunfish Pond County Park. The “Pond” is a 20 acre lake contained within the county park. Sunfish pond is fed by shallow springs. The latitude and longitude coordinates for this lake are 41.6434,-76.6966 and the altitude is 2070 feet (631meters)
Sunfish Pond County Park is set in southwestern Bradford County (LeRoy Township) adjacent to State Game Lands #12. To reach the park from Rte 414 head towards Leroy. From Leroy on Route 414, turn onto Mill Street (SR 3010) cross over the Towanda Creek. At the stop sign go straight following park signs. This becomes Leroy Mountain Road, a steep, somewhat rugged dirt road. At 2.4 miles turn right at the sign into the park.
