Register & Recorder

About the Department

The office of Register and Recorder in Bradford County is the official recorder of deeds, mortgages, power of attorneys, satisfaction pieces, oil leases, ordinances, assignments and releases of mortgages. It is also the collection agency for the Department of Revenue for the 1% Realty Transfer Tax on each deed and the collection agency for the school districts and municipalities. Under the Register of Wills the office probates approximately 350 to 400 estates a year, and collects over 2 million dollars in inheritance tax. It is a part of the court system and holds hearings on will contests and anything that is appealed due to probate.

Department Services

This office is responsible for the administration of marriage licenses, adoptions, relinquishments, settlements and guardianships. The office has birth and death records from 1893 through 1905 and it does several hundred genealogy letters each year. Deed and mortgage indexes are available on the computer back to 1970 and we are in the process of scanning the rest of the books. You can search on the computer by name, date, location, parcel number and instrument type. Turnaround time for recording is about 3 days. The instrument is received, scanned, proofed, verified, and then it is returned. Maps that are approved by the Bradford County Planning Commission are also recorded here.
